Ferrous Processing & Trading accepts all kinds of scrap metal for recycling including ferrous and non-ferrous materials.  One common non-ferrous material is copper.  Copper is used for many different purposes and can be found in everything from construction materials, to cookware, to cell phones.  In recent years, the scrap metal value of copper has remained high, prompting more and more people to look for ways to recycle it when possible.

A Uniquely Versatile Metal

As a non-ferrous material, copper does not contain any iron.  It has many unique properties that make it so versatile.  It is one of the most durable and versatile metals.  It is malleable, ductile, and strong.  Furthermore, copper is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.  In fact, it is the best conductor of heat and electricity on the entire periodic table.  The earliest use of copper dates back almost 10,000 years.  Copper was used for everything from armor, to jewelry, to construction materials.

Copper is a popular metal to recycle because it retains so many of its properties even after it is recycled.  In fact, copper can be recycled again and again almost an infinite number of times without losing any of its integrity.  It is one of the most commonly recycled metals in the planet.  According to current pricing, high-grade recycled copper scrap metal is worth almost as much as new virgin copper.   Experts estimate that nearly 80% of all the copper in use today has been recycled.  When you consider how long copper has been in use, it is truly remarkable how well copper scrap metal is processed.  There is no telling how old the material in a copper pipe may be…it could be centuries old!

Because of how well copper recycles, the need to mine virgin copper ore reduces each year.  However, many scientists believe that there is still a large quantity of copper within the earth.  Some even predict that we could continue to mine new copper material at our current rate for over 5 million more years.
